Vitamin K2 has been getting noticeably more attention in our industry over the past two years. Beyond bone health, studies on vascular calcification, post-exercise recovery, and muscle loss have been published one after another. Both the academic and the commercial sides are warming up.

On June 14, the Federation of Asian Nutrition Societies (FANS) announced the establishment of the 2026 FANS Vitamin K2 Research Grant at a Vitamin K2 industry summit in Shanghai, funded by Sungen Biotech. Two months later, on August 18, the application guidelines were officially released on the Chinese Nutrition Society (CNS) website. Researchers worldwide can now submit applications following the guidelines.

At the launch ceremony, FANS President and CNS President Prof. Yuexin Yang noted that new functional nutrients like vitamin K2 are drawing growing attention from both the scientific community and public health. This grant is meant to turn that attention into concrete research projects.

The grant covers three research directions worth a closer look:

1. Vitamin K2 and human health — bone and muscle, post-exercise recovery, and cardiovascular health, with a focus on mechanisms, dosage, and combined interventions. Dosage has long been a point of debate in K2 product design. More human data from this grant would make formulation work much easier.

1. Bioavailability and functional differences among vitamin K2 forms — absorption differences across dosage forms and raw materials, the function and metabolism of different molecular forms, and the metabolic differences between K1 and K2. Names like MK-4, MK-7, and reduced K2 show up regularly on supplier quotation sheets, but consumers can hardly tell them apart, and the industry itself is still building the evidence base.

1. A comparative study of vitamin K2 regulations, standards, and health claims across markets — this one matters directly to companies doing exports or domestic registrations. How a health claim is treated in the EU, Japan, and China determines how a product is designed and what the label says.

On the industry side, another date worth noting is October 14–16: AAES2026, the 17th HerbBridge Tech Expo & Conference, will take place at the Nanjing International Exhibition Center (Xinzhuang), under the theme "Technology Drives the Future." According to the organizer HerbBridge, the expo is expected to host 230+ exhibitors and 9,000+ products and technology solutions, covering raw materials, OEM/ODM, innovative dosage forms, and medicine-food homology.

Vitamin K2 has a clear presence at AAES2026 as well: Sungen Biotech will attend as a sponsored speaker, and Chen Yibin, General Manager of its Raw Materials Division, will present on "Vitamin K2: Precision Nutrition Industry Applications." The Vitamin K2 Industry White Paper, previewed at the June summit, is also scheduled for official release during this AAES. For anyone who wants a systematic look at the K2 industry chain, the white paper is worth picking up.

Put the two together, and the signal is clear: the evidence base for vitamin K2 is being filled in systematically, and comparative research on regulations and standards is now on the agenda.
